Please join the Sierra Club MA Chapter, Friends of Myles Standish State Forest, and Community Land & Water Coalition on a 5-mile spring hike through the exceptional Myles Standish State Forest. This area contains Atlantic coast Pine Barrens, kettle ponds, cranberry bogs, and habitat for rare, endangered plants and animals and is only one of a handful of ecosystems like this in the world.

We will be discussing at the event the state park’s geology, floral, and fauna as well as forest protection, sand mining, and solar siting in the region.

  • Hiking Trail – 5 mi loop trail around Charge Pond in MSSF, minor elevation gain of 164’; this is considered a moderate hike due to the trail being mostly on sand and loose dirt.
  • Pre-trip Talk – SC Outings Leader will give a brief pre-trip talk and introduce the speakers.
  • Speakers – Linda Coombs of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe, Friends of MSSF, and Meg Sheehan & Katherine Harrelson from Community Land & Water Coalition/STPB
  • Guided hike – Friends of MSSF have offered a biologist, bird expert, and/or botanist who are on their board, to provide interpretation during the hike.

LEVEL: Moderate as trails are on loose sand & dirt plus significant sun exposure

OUTING DETAILS:

  • Participants are to be in good physical shape to experience the day hike.
  • The outing is open to adults and children (10 years and up) accompanied by a parent.
  • We are offering an option to car camp in one of the state forest’s campgrounds on 5/17. A group campsite has been reserved with a limit of 20 people and 4 cars.

We look forward to you joining us at Myles Standish State Forest!
